Savoy Blues, Part 1: Rhythm Part
In 1927, Louis Armstrong featured guitarist Lonnie Johnson on his Hot Five recording of “Savoy Blues.” The recording includes a section where the rest of the band drops out, leaving Johnson and Johnny St. Cyr to play a 12-bar blues guitar duet. In this lesson, you’ll learn St. Cyr’s rhythm part and Johnson’s solo. St. Cyr played six-string banjo with many of the most important New Orleans jazz musicians, including Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton, while Johnson recorded prolifically in many styles, including, blues, jazz, and R&B. In the 1920s he had feature solos on recordings by Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, and Louis Armstrong, and others. At the end of the 1920s, Johnson made a number of duet recordings with Eddie Lang. In this video, Matt shows you St. Cyr’s rhythm part.
