Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor

In this lesson you’ll learn a fingerstyle arrangement of the folk-blues classic “Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor” inspired by the playing of Mississippi John Hurt. Orville plays the song through and then explains the guitar part phrase by phrase. He also explains how you can alter the lengths of some of the chords, depending on how you hear the song, something that John Hurt and other great blues singers and guitarists did all the time.

Now that you’ve learned the melody, it’s time to tackle Orville’s solo to the blues rhumba. The solo uses slides, bends, and hybrid picking (in which you use the pick and the middle finger of the picking hand together), among other blues lead techniques. Orville walks you through the solo phrase by phrase in this video. And when you’re done you can practice the solo and melody with Orville’s Rhythm Buddies using the audio Play-Along Track at right.
