How to Play “Wagon Wheel”

In this lesson you’ll learn to play the jam-session favorite “Wagon Wheel,” using two different roll patterns, the alternating thumb roll and the forward reverse roll. Bill gives you advice on changing chords and keeping the roll going even if your fingers haven’t quite managed to finger the complete chord yet.

Foggy Mountain Breakdown, Part 2

Learn the rest of Earl Scruggs’ classic banjo tune “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” in this lesson, including the “hook” of the tune, which uses an E minor chord. Bill breaks it down for you, note for note, making sure you know the roll patterns to use for each phrase as well as the left-hand fingering. You’ll also learn a “fill-in lick” that you can use in many tunes and songs. It’s played with a new roll: the “lick” roll, which also gets used in other songs. Bill finishes by playing the whole “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” solo at slow and medium tempos and then at a fast tempo with guitarist Scott Nygaard. (The downloadable Play-Along MP3 at right is the medium tempo version.)
