Getting Started with the Bass, Part 3: Pulling the String

Learn how to get a sound from the bass, by “pulling” the string with the side of your index finger, from the tip to the second knuckle. Zoe gives you advice on where to place your thumb against the side of the fingerboard, how to pull through the string and rest on the adjacent string, and getting different sounds out of the bass, depending on where you place your finger. She also shows you how to use your middle finger, both on its own and alternating with your index finger.

Dirk Powell recorded his great original song “Waterbound” on his album Time Again and there’s also a great version of him singing it on the Transatlantic Sessions. His original recording is very crooked, and the Transatlantic Sessions version is straightened out a bit. In this lesson, Zoe shows you the Transatlantic Sessions version, which has phrases of five long beats, which can be thought of as two and a half measures in 4/4 or a bar of 6/4 and a bar of 4/4. Zoe starts by walking you through the basic chord progression and then shows you a few ways to play the bass line.
