Getting Started with the Bass, Part 3: Pulling the String

Learn how to get a sound from the bass, by “pulling” the string with the side of your index finger, from the tip to the second knuckle. Zoe gives you advice on where to place your thumb against the side of the fingerboard, how to pull through the string and rest on the adjacent string, and getting different sounds out of the bass, depending on where you place your finger. She also shows you how to use your middle finger, both on its own and alternating with your index finger.

Nobody Knows What You Do, Part 1
Nobody Knows What You Do, Part 1

“Nobody Knows What You Do” comes from John Hartford and was recorded on his album of the same name. It has a chromatic chord progression that is common in a lot of tunes. It’s in the key of A and starts on a IV chord (D) followed by a IV# diminished chord (D#dim) and a V chord (E), before resolving to A. Zoe explains the D#dim, pointing out that it’s part of a B7 (II7) chord, and then shows you the basic bass line, a five measure part that repeats throughout the song. Then she shows you some different ways to play the bass line. In the first variation, she adds skips or ghost notes to the line, and explains how she does that by muting the string and plucking the ghost note with her middle finger.
