New Camptown Races, Part 1

The jam session favorite “New Camptown Races” was written by bluegrass mandolinist Frank Wakefield and first recorded on his 1964 album with bluegrass singer/guitarist Red Allen. There have been many great recordings of it since, by David Grisman (with fiddler Richard Greene), Randy Howard, Michael Cleveland, and others. “New Camptown Races” is in the key of Bb and it moves to G minor, the relative minor of Bb, in the B part, so Chad gets you started with a Bb major scale. He also shows you how to play all the modes in Bb, so that you will really get comfortable in the key. Then Chad plays the tune through and breaks it down phrase by phrase. You’ll learn the A part of “New Camptown Races” in this video.
