Peghead Nation fiddle instructor Chad Manning is a talented multi-instrumentalist, and while he was in the studio recording lessons for his Beginning/Intermedaite Fiddle and Bluegrass Fiddle courses, he took a run through the jam-session favorite “Whiskey Before Breakfast” on mandolin, joined by our co-founder and guitar instructor Scott Nygaard.

Chad is the fiddle player in David Grisman's Bluegrass Experience and the David Grisman Sextet, and in this video, he plays a Giacomel mandolin on loan from David.

Learn fiddle with Chad in his Beginning/Intermedaite Fiddle and Bluegrass Fiddle courses on Peghead Nation.

Learn guitar with Scott in any of his four courses: Roots and Bluegrass Rhythm Guitar, Intermediate Flatpicking Guitar, Flatpicking Guitar, or Weekly Guitar Workout.

Teja, thanks for your prompt and helpful reply and pardon my delayed reply. I have been continuing with lessons but forgot to check back here for your response.

I've been taking Chad's beginning/intermediate fiddle course, and he is an awesome fiddler. It was exciting to see him playing mandolin too. Maybe he could do some lessons for those of us trying to bridge the gap between the two instruments.

Hi Lee,
Thanks for the comment. There are a lot of different approaches to live recording. Do you already have recording gear and are only looking for a mic? I'd probably look for a stereo mic, like the Rode NT-4, for example, which would allow you to get a good basic sound without a lot of setup. Another approach would be to use a digital recorder with a built-in set of mics, like the Zoom H-6, which we use for the audio of many of our live performance videos.

Awesome work guys, thanks for playing this and sharing it with us! I'd like some suggestions of a mic I can use for live recordings of my acoustic instruments and would appreciate your insights if you have the time to respond.
