For the final workshop of “The Banjo Style of J. D. Crowe,” Bill is joined by banjo player and fiddler Ron Stewart, who played fiddle in the New South for many years and is now playing banjo with the legendary Seldom Scene. Ron is the only musician ever to receive IBMA awards for both Fiddle Player of the Year (2000) and Banjo Player of the Year (2011). Ron learned much from J.D. in the years he played in the band and he and Bill explore a variety of ideas about J.D.’s right-hand attack, tone production, note separation, and much, much more. They also look at J.D.’s playing on “You Can Have Her” from two different performances in 1973 and 1975.
“You Can Have Her”
“You Can Have Her” was originally a 1961 rock ‘n’ roll hit for Roy Hamilton and became a staple of J.D. Crowe’s live shows. Bill and Ron take a look at two of J.D.’s solos from the 1973 bluegrass/country fusion album “Bluegrass Evolution” as well as a live version from McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA recorded on August 14, 1975.
