In this lesson, you’ll learn the reel “Anything for John Joe.” It’s what is often called a “half reel” or “single reel,” meaning there are only 16 measures in the whole tune. Marla starts by playing “Anything for John Joe” through a couple times and then takes it apart slowly, phrase by phrase.

Another classic combination of tunes is the pairing of the two hornpipes that both go by the name “The Peacock’s Feather.” This set is probably best known from the recording by fiddler Frankie Gavin and bouzouki player Alec Finn, who recorded a fantastic duo album in 1977. The first of the two hornpipes is in the key of D Dorian, but with an occasional F#. Marla walks you through the melody of both parts of “The Peacock’s Feather" (#1) in this video.
