THE JIG RHYTHM

Jigs are the other most commonly played dance form in Irish traditional music. The 6/8 jig rhythm is unique and has a specific strumming pattern and a particular feel. Beginning jig players often use an alternating picking pattern, but to get the right feel, it’s usually better to use a down-up-down, down-up-down pattern. Flynn demonstrates the pattern and gives you a couple of exercises to help you get used to the pattern.

Using a Capo, Part 3: Capo 7

With the capo on the seventh fret in DADGAD, D shapes sound as A, G shapes sound as D, A shapes sound as E, and C shapes sound as G, making it a great place to play A major, minor, and modal tunes. This is a great position for playing with Scottish fiddlers, who often play in A. You can use the practice tracks for “The High Reel,” “Scatter the Mud” and “Dan Breen’s” to practice playing A modal and minor tunes with the capo at the seventh fret.
