Duke Ellington penned “In a Mellotone”—sometimes written as “In a Mellow Tone”—with lyricist Milt Gabler in 1939. Now a jazz standard, “Mellotone” has been recorded by hundreds of artists, including Dexter Gordon and Ben Webster, Herb Ellis and Joe Pass, and of course, Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra’s classic 1940 recording. You’ll learn the song in the key of Ab. In this video, Aaron lays out the chord progression.
