One of the ways you can start embellishing melodies is by varying the pickups to lines of the melody. In “Worried Man Blues” the vocal pickup is just one word/note: “it.” In this video, Lauren shows you how you can start varying the pickup rhythmically and melodically.

You can also fill out the melody by playing double stops on long melody notes. To do that, of course, you’ll need to know what the chords are. Lauren explains the chord progression and the concept of I, IV, and V chords (D, G, and A in the key of D). The D (or I) chord consists of the notes D, F#, and A (scale steps 1, 3, and 5). The G (or IV) consists of G, B, and D (scale steps 4, 6, and 1). And the A (or V) chord consists of A, C#, and E (scale steps 5, 7, and 2).
