One of the ways you can start embellishing melodies is by varying the pickups to lines of the melody. In “Worried Man Blues” the vocal pickup is just one word/note: “it.” In this video, Lauren shows you how you can start varying the pickup rhythmically and melodically.

Lauren reminds you that in the key of A, the I is A (AC#E), the IV is D (DF#A), and the V is E (EG#B). You’ll find the basic melody on your fingerboard, and recognize that the handshape feels like the lower octave in the key of D. Droning the open string above the melody provides a pinky workout, and a nice double-stop sound. Lauren challenges you to find the pickups and flesh out the solo yourself, based on your previous knowledge and familiar hand shape muscle memory.
