Old-Time Blues with Suzy Thompson, Part 2: Suzy Thompson Teaches “Dickson County Blues”

“Dickson County Blues” is one of the more popular and distinctive old-time fiddle blues. It comes from Arthur Smith, who was one of the most popular fiddlers on the Grand Ole Opry in the 1920s, ‘30s, and ‘40s and is often considered the father of bluegrass fiddling. His playing was smooth and precise and highly influential among Southern fiddlers and anyone who tuned into the Grand Ole Opry broadcast on WSM radio. He also wrote many songs and tunes, including this slightly crooked blues in the key of D. Suzy Thompson lays it out for you here, phrase by phrase, including the second part, which has an extra bar or bar-and-a-half depending on the mood of the fiddler. (ericandsuzy.com)
