Fiddling in “Five” with Laura Cortese, Part 1
Laura Cortese grew up going to fiddle camp—the Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School in Northern California—and spent a lot of time learning Scottish, Cape Breton, Quebecois, and old-time fiddle music. She is also a great singer and songwriter and is known for using the fiddle with her voice. Her band Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards (lauracortese.net) is an all-bowed-instrument band (two fiddles and cello, or sometimes two fiddles, cello, and bass) that features the percussive aspect of the stringed instruments. She also runs the Miles of Music Camp (milesofmusiccamp.com), and is currently working on an album of original fiddle instrumentals. In this video she and Brittany get started by playing her original “Tune in Five” and talk about her fiddling background as well as her five-string fiddle, made by Gary Bartig of Minneapolis, Minnesota (acousticelectricstrings.com).
