Slants: “Great Speckled Bird”
Slants are a great tool for harmonizing and playing double stops in smooth ways that you normally can’t do with a straight bar. Usually you try to keep the bar parallel to the frets, but when you slant, you angle the bar so that, for example, the bar is at the 12th fret of the first string and the 11th fret of the third string. There are two different slants, forward and backward, and Mike shows you how to play both of them. “Great Speckled Bird” is a classic Dobro tune played by both Brother Oswald and Josh Graves that features some cool sliding slants with tremolo. Mike walks you through the tune phrase by phrase, with tips on getting your slants in tune and adding dynamics.
