Chord Melody Basics, Part 2: Picking-Hand Technique

Your fretting hand determines the notes you’re playing but your picking hand determines how those notes (and chords) are articulated. Aaron shows you how to create different sounds with the two progressions you learned in Part 1 by separating the chord and melody notes in different rhythmic ways, for example, playing the melody note before the full chord, or the bass note before the full chord. He also demonstrates how you can combine these approaches to give your chord melody performance some rhythmic variety.

Satin Doll, Part 1

“Satin Doll” is one of Duke Ellington’s most popular songs, and one of the most popular jazz standards. The form of “Satin Doll” is AABA, and, as he does in many of his arrangements, Aaron approaches each A part differently. In the first A part, he starts low on the fingerboard with two- and three-note block voicings, and in the second A part he separates the lower (bass) note of the voicings from the melody. You’ll learn the first two A parts in this video.
