Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor

In this lesson you’ll learn a fingerstyle arrangement of the folk-blues classic “Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor” inspired by the playing of Mississippi John Hurt. Orville plays the song through and then explains the guitar part phrase by phrase. He also explains how you can alter the lengths of some of the chords, depending on how you hear the song, something that John Hurt and other great blues singers and guitarists did all the time.

Shuffle on Home, Part 1: Riff and Rhythm

Shuffle on Home, Part 2: Melody and Solos

The melody of “Shuffle on Home” is mostly played in double stops (two-note dyads). Orville shows you the melody, phrase by phrase, including a cool harmonic and some nice sliding sixth chords. He also shows you the two solos he plays. The first solo is mostly based on a G minor pentatonic scale, and includes some string bends and arpeggio licks. The second starts with a repeated “stuttering” figure, includes some string bends, and ends the same as the first solo. You can practice playing the melody and solos with Orville’s Rhythm Buddies using the audio Play-Along Track below (the track starts with a two-measure intro).
