Whiskey Before Breakfast, Part 1: Simple Fiddle Tune Solo
The fiddle tune “Whiskey Before Breakfast” is a jam favorite of mandolin and fiddle players, but doesn’t lay out as well on the banjo. However, by following the chord progression you can create an easy solo that fits the tune without having to duplicate the fiddle melody exactly. You can use this version as a solo in itself, or play it when the tempo gets too fast to play the tune melodic style. “Whiskey Before Breakfast” is in the key of D, so it works best if you use a fifth-string capo to move the fifth string up to an A note, which is in the D major chord. This allows you to more easily play roll patterns in the key of D.
