“Sally Goodin” is one of the classics of the bluegrass and old-time fiddle repertoire, and Earl Scruggs recorded a great version on Foggy Mountain Banjo that’s an essential part of Scruggs’ repertoire. It’s played up the neck using some techniques that you can use in other tunes, like “Lonesome Road Blues,” “Sally Ann,” etc. Bill starts by showing you the up-the-neck chord position at the eighth fret that Earl used for the A part and then walks you through the whole A part, phrase by phrase. The B part moves even farther up the neck, and Bill walks you through it note by note, finishing it up by playing the whole tune at a slow speed and then a fast speed with guitarist Scott Nygaard. (The downloadable Play-Along MP3 at right is the slow version.)
