On May 19, 1954, six months before Elvis Presley made his first records, Earl Scruggs recorded the first rock ’n’ roll banjo tune, “Foggy Mountain Special,” which you’ll learn in this lesson. The tune moves through a few different positions up the neck, so Bill walks you through each phrase slowly, showing you where to shift positions. He ends by playing it all the way through slowly, and then, if you’ve got it down at a medium tempo, so you can try playing along with him.
