June Apple

In this lesson, Chad teaches you the popular old-time tune "June Apple," which is in the key of A Mixolydian. Mixolydian means that the seventh in the major scale (in this case, G#) is lowered a half step (to G). In the first part of the lesson, Chad teaches the A part of "June Apple" phrase by phrase and also shows you the "Nashville shuffle" bowing pattern, which works well on the A part of this tune.

Bluegrass Stomp

The Bill Monroe instrumental “Bluegrass Stomp,” a swingy blues in the key of D, gives you the opportunity to work on some new bow techniques, in particular, learning to stop the bow, or “bow breaks.” Chad shows you the melody phrase by phrase, including a bowing in which you play two up bows in a row. He also shows you how to play with more staccato bowing to give the tune a nice swingy feel.

Fiddle Videos

Peghead Nation Old-Time Fiddle instructor Bruce Molsky has countless great old dance tunes in his repertoire. They may have started out as simple tunes to keep the dancers’ feet moving, but Bruce turns them into self-contained solo fiddle pieces, as heard in this performance of “Walking in the Parlor,” recorded in the studio when Bruce was taping his Old-Time Fiddle course lessons. To learn great old-time fiddle tunes like this from Bruce, enroll in his Old-Time Fiddle course on Peghead Nation today.
