How to Play “Wagon Wheel”

In this lesson you’ll learn to play the jam-session favorite “Wagon Wheel,” using two different roll patterns, the alternating thumb roll and the forward reverse roll. Bill gives you advice on changing chords and keeping the roll going even if your fingers haven’t quite managed to finger the complete chord yet.

Soldier’s Joy, Part 2

Bill takes apart his arrangement of “Soldier’s Joy” measure by measure in this video, starting with the A part. He shows you the basic melody played with the thumb, and how the arrangement really just fills in that melody with notes played with the index or middle fingers, using an alternating thumb pattern for the first three measures. The third measure is an A barre chord played with a forward reverse roll. Measures five and six are the same as measures one and two, and the A part ends with a forward reverse roll and a couple of pinches. The B part of “Soldier’s Joy” uses forward reverse rolls on the chords, which change every measure. Bill takes apart the B part measure by measure, and finishes by playing “Soldier’s Joy” through at a medium tempo with guitar accompaniment.
