How to Play “Wagon Wheel”

In this lesson you’ll learn to play the jam-session favorite “Wagon Wheel,” using two different roll patterns, the alternating thumb roll and the forward reverse roll. Friend of the Devil

The Grateful Dead song “Friend of the Devil” is one of the band’s most popular songs and one that is often played by bluegrass jams and at bluegrass jams. It’s also a good song to work on changing chords quickly, as the chords in the verse of “Friend of the Devil” change every half measure. You’ll also learn a couple new chord shapes in this lesson. Bill starts by showing you the chords you’ll need and then gives you advice on changing them quickly. The forward reverse roll is good for this as it gives you time to move from one chord to the next when your thumb is playing the fifth string. After showing you the chords and the roll pattern, Bill walks  you through the progression for each section (verse, chorus, and bridge) of “Friend of the Devil.”
