Nine Pound Hammer, Part 2: Melodic Variations
To create melodic variations to a song, it’s a good idea to start by taking the song apart and looking at each melodic fragment: what chord it’s on, what the rhythm of the melody is, whether it’s leading into another chord or staying on the same chord, etc. In “Nine Pound Hammer,” there are four melodic fragments, and Scott has labeled them Melody 1, Melody 2, etc. In this lesson, he gives you four variations on Melody 1 and Melody 2, shows you how they relate to the original melody, and makes sure you understand the melodic variation’s rhythmic relation to the preceding phrase.
