Benny’s Bugle, Part 2: Charlie Christian Solo
Charlie Christian takes the first solo on the recording of “Benny’s Bugle” and it’s a classic, one of those solos learned by most jazz and swing guitarists. He takes two choruses of the blues, the first is a little more riff-based (he never really outlines the Eb or F chords) while the second builds in intensity with some nice Bb7b9, Eb13, and F13 arpeggios. Scott walks you through both solos in this video, giving you advice on fingering and pointing out Charlie’s across-the-bar-line phrasing and how his lines correspond to the underlying blues progression.
