Tim Sparks, Part 2: Tim Teaches “Wayfaring Stranger”
As one of the most frequently performed American folk songs, “Wayfaring Stranger” has an instantly recognizable melody. In this lesson, Tim teaches his arrangement, which is in dropped-D tuning. His steady Travis-style alternating bass is a solid foundation for his reharmonization, which includes extended chord voicings and single-note lines. Note that the transcription included here is based on the album version of the arrangement rather than the performance in Part 1, in which Tim stays close to the notation while stating the theme in the first 16 bars, and then he plays largely improvised parts based on many of the ideas he talks about. timsparks.com
