Scheerhorn Maple

Mike Witcher demonstrates a Scheerhorn Maple resonator guitar.

Luthier Tim Scheerhorn began building guitars in the 1970s, and his dobro-style resonator guitars are considered to be among the finest modern resonator guitars. Though Scheerhorn is now semi-retired, National Reso-Phonic (nationalguitars.com) of San Luis Obispo, California, began building a line of guitars bearing Scheerhorn’s designs in 2013 under a licensing agreement. Working closely with Scheerhorn to ensure that his professional standards were met, the company offers three standard variations on Scheerhorn’s L-body models: the Maple, Mahogany, and Rob Ickes Signature Model.

In this video, Peghead Nation dobro instructor Mike Witcher demonstrates the Maple model. Built with figured maple top, back, and sides, the guitar features Scheerhorn’s innovative open-chamber design with six soundposts and an internal baffle. The guitar uses Scheerhorn’s own hand-spun cone, a cast spider, fan coverplate, and an extra tall, removable hand rest.
