Mike’s Banjo Mute
Evie Ladin demonstrates a great tool for quiet banjo practice.
There are many jokes about banjo mutes, but being able to practice quietly is something all musicians need to do at times, regardless of the instrument they play. So, a banjo mute can come in handy if you live in an apartment, need to practice around others, or want to play your banjo late at night. In this video, Peghead Nation instructor Evie Ladin demonstrates Mike’s Banjo Mute ($44.95) using a Vega Vintage Star open-back banjo (also check out her demo of the banjo!).
Mike’s Banjo Mute consists of a brass bar that attaches to the top of the bridge with two aluminum hooks that are tightened with two adjustment screws with thumbwheels. The mute is available for four- and five-string instruments, and the five-string version is available for standard or radiused bridges. Mike’s Banjo Mute fits most bridges and works on both open-back and resonator banjos.
“It takes away a lot of the resonance, while keeping the tuning,” says Evie. “You can get your right-hand practice, your chord practice, your drop-thumb practice, and it still sounds like your banjo!”
