Mike Witcher demonstrates a classic Paul Beard resonator guitar.

Paul Beard began building resonator guitars in the mid-1980s, and has become one of the most popular builders advancing the classic Dobro squareneck design. Paying special attention to the design of the instrument’s soundwell and cones, Beard developed a line of instruments with a highly refined voice, and, as a result, top players, including Mike Auldridge, Jerry Douglas, Josh Graves, and Stacy Phillips, began playing Beard resonators.

Beard’s E Model was first introduced in 1987, and it’s been a mainstay of Beard’s line ever since. A top-mounted resonator system and open-brace body design creates a tuned body cavity that generates brilliant trebles and a particularly rich bass. Demonstrated by Peghead Nation Dobro instructor Mike Witcher, the guitar in this video has a beautiful quilted maple body.
