Mike Compton: “Bluegrass Ramble”

Peghead Nation mandolin instructor plays a Bill Monroe cross-tuned instrumental.
January 31, 2018

While Peghead Nation mandolin instructor Mike Compton was in the studio recording instructional videos for his Monroe-Style Mandolin course, he recorded this cross-tuned instrumental backed by Peghead Nation co-founder and Flatpicking Guitar instructor Scott Nygaard. Monroe recorded the tune in 1950 and tuned his mandolin (low to high) AA EE AA AC#. The tuning’s distinctive sound is a result of the top pair of strings being tuned to different pitches (A and C#).

Learn Bill Monroe’s mandolin style and more from Mike in his Monroe-Style Mandolin course, or guitar with Scott in his Flatpicking Guitar, Roots and Bluegrass Rhythm Guitar, and Intermediate Flatpicking Guitar courses. Enroll in Peghead Nation today!
