Ed Gerhard, “Killing the Blues”

October 3, 2014

Known for his gorgeous tone and thoughtful arrangements, Ed Gerhard has been a mainstay on the fingerstyle guitar scene for more than two decades. Fans who have experienced one of Gerhard’s live performances know to expect a few tunes played on a Weissenborn-style lap-slide guitar in any set, as Gerhard is one of the few players to use this instrument in a solo context.

Gerhard recently stopped by the Peghead Nation video studio to record a lesson for an upcoming segment of the Advanced Fingerstyle Workshop, and also performed his instrumental arrangement of Rowland Salley’s “Killing the Blues.” Played on a custom Breedlove guitar built in the Weissenborn style, Gerhard allows the tune to breathe, taking advantage of the slide’s haunting quality for both the single-note melody and chord structure.
