Doug Young: “Sunbreak”
A beautiful original fingerstyle piece by Peghead Nation’s newest guitar instructor.
San Francisco Bay Area guitarist Doug Young has been a long-time presence on the fingerstyle scene as a performer, instructor, and author, and we’re happy to welcome him as an instructor here at Peghead Nation. A widely respected authority on the topic, Doug is teaching Alternate Tunings Fingerstyle Guitar, which is adding new lessons every month!
“Sunbreak” is a brand-new original composition, played in DADEAD tuning. “I wrote it to explore this tuning, which is a close relative to DADGAD, and one that Alex de Grassi frequently used in his early recordings,” says Doug. “The recurring theme that forms the A section leverages open strings, some cross-string patterns, and repeated notes on adjacent strings. The basic form is AABACA, with some variations between different sections. After a slow, tentative introduction, I tried to maintain a sense of motion throughout the tune, leading to the title—a feeling of opening up, or breaking through.”
