Doug Young and Teja Gerken, “The Seagull”

Peghead Nation instructor Doug Young is joined by co-founder Teja Gerken for a guitar duet of an original tune.

In true guitar aficionado fashion, Peghead Nation instructor Doug Young wrote “The Seagull” while reviewing a Seagull-brand guitar several years ago. When Doug first recorded the tune for his album Closing Time in 2011, he asked me to join him, so I came up with a second guitar part. That was the first recording that we made as a duo, and we revisited the piece when we chose material for our recent album DUETS. In the process, I came up with a completely different part than what I played on the first version. When Doug was recently in the Peghead Nation studio to shoot lessons for his Alternate Tunings Fingerstyle Guitar course, we played the arrangement found on DUETS, with Doug playing his Charis SJ, tuned to DADGAD, while I’m playing slide on my National Reso-Phonic Style 1, tuned to CGCGCD, capo 2.
