California Banjo Extravaganza: “Train 45 / Reuben’s Train”
A performance from Bill Evans, Joe Newberry, and Danny Barnes, with an all-star band of Sharon Gilchrist, Chad Manning, John Reischman, and Jim Nunally.
The fifth annual California Banjo Extravaganza featured Peghead Nation banjo instructor Bill Evans and this year’s guests Joe Newberry and Danny Barnes headlining six concerts and hosting a Banjo Mini-Camp in November.
Each year, Bill and his banjo compatriots are joined by the Extravaganza’s all-star band, which includes Peghead Nation instructors Chad Manning and Sharon Gilchrist, along with guitar master Jim Nunally and mandolin great John Reischman, who will be joining Peghead Nation’s mandolin teaching staff in early 2017 (sign up for email updates about that course here).
In this video from the tour’s stop at the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, California, Jim leads the band in a lively round of what Bill calls “Train 45 / Reuben’s Train.” Bill explains, “We’re essentially playing “Train 45” from a bluegrass banjo perspective, but singing “Reuben’s Train” over that.”
