Mike Compton: “Going Back to Vicksburg”
Our Monroe-Style Mandolin instructor plays an original tune at Great Lakes Music Camp.
In addition to being a master of bluegrass and traditional mandolin styles, Mike Compton writes great tunes and moving songs (see his performance of his original song “Death and Blues” by clicking here). During a break in the action at Great Lakes Music Camp last fall, we stepped out onto the windy deck with Lake Michigan in the background, and Mike treated us to a solo run through a tune that he recently wrote, “Going Back to Vicksburg,” played on his custom Duff two-point mandolin.
Great Lakes Music Camp is held every October on the shore of Lake Michigan, in West Olive, Michigan. Each year the organizers gather a talented group of instructors to lead three days of intensive teaching, jamming, and performances, and in its seven-year history, this weekend has become a destination for bluegrass, old-time, and roots players from around the world. There was another big Peghead Nation instructor contingent in 2024, including Mike Compton, Bruce Molsky, Zoe Guigueno, John Reischman, Emerald Rae, Ethan Setiawan, Stash Wyslouch .
