Marla Fibish and Flynn Cohen: Rocky Road to Dublin, Comb Your Hair and Curl It, James Kelly’s
Peghead Nation Irish mandolin and guitar teachers play a set of hop jigs at our 10th Anniversary Party and Showcase.
Marla Fibish and Flynn Cohen were on hand to hold down the Irish music corner during Peghead Nation’s 10th Anniversary Party and Showcase, and they treated us to this great set of hop jigs as part of their showcase set – Rocky Road to Dublin, Comb Your Hair and Curl It, and James Kelly’s. Marla teaches “Comb Your Hair and Curl It” in her popular Irish Mandolin course on Peghead Nation, along with dozens of other Irish tunes. Marla is a leading voice in the mandolin community, performing and teaching at workshops and camps around the nation and world. Her ensembles include duo Noctambule, with guitarist Bruce Victor, and a mandolin and fiddle duo with San Francisco Bay Area fiddler Rebecca Richman, recently documented with a new album called Playdate.
And we got to spend quality time with Flynn in the days following the party, shooting several new lessons for his Irish Flatpicking Guitar course, which joins his Irish Backup Guitar course in the Peghead Nation guitar lineup. Flynn is a New England-based musician who can be heard in his band Low Lily, with guitarist and songwriter Liz Simons, and in a long-running duo with Irish accordion player John Whelan, among other projects.
The Peghead Nation 10th Anniversary Party and Showcase happened in November, at Studio Fourth Street, a beautiful new performance and gathering space in Peghead Nation’s hometown of San Rafael, California. In addition to a fun hang and lots of catching up with students, teachers, family, and friends, the evening featured short performances from the Peghead co-founders and an impressive contingent of instructors. It was a special night of unique collaborations and wonderful performances from many of the folks who have made our first decade possible.
Take a look at the Featured Videos section of Peghead Nation for more great performances from the 10th Anniversary Showcase.
