John Reischman, Ethan Setiawan, Mike Compton, and Kenny Smith: “Turkey in the Straw”
Three Peghead Nation mandolin instructors play a bluegrass classic at Great Lakes Music Camp.
This is some serious mandolin firepower and fun! Peghead mandolin teachers Ethan Setiawan, John Reischman, and Mike Compton are joined by guitar master Kenny Smith in a run-through of “Turkey in the Straw” during a spontaneous moment at Great Lakes Music Camp in early October, with Lake Michigan right outside of the window. They also explore new picking techniques before jumping into the tune! You can learn to play mandolin with each of these gents on Peghead Nation.
Great Lakes Music Camp is held every October on the shore of Lake Michigan, in West Olive, Michigan. Each year the organizers gather a talented group of instructors to lead three days of intensive teaching, jamming, and performances, and in its seven-year history, this weekend has become a destination for bluegrass, old-time, and roots players from around the world. There is another big Peghead Nation instructor contingent this year, including Mike Compton, Bruce Molsky, Zoe Guigueno, John Reischman, Emerald Rae, Ethan Setiawan, Stanislaw Wyslouch .
Learn mandolin with Mike Compton in his Monroe-Style Mandolin course.
