Cathy Fink and Christylez Bacon: ”Soldier’s Joy”
Peghead Nation instructor teams up with beatboxer and progressive hip hop artist to create a cross-genre version of an old-time favorite.
Among the many highlights of last month’s Wintergrass Festival in Bellevue, Washington is this spontaneous moment in the Peghead Parlor, our gathering of Peghead Nation students and followers, with some special late-night performances from our instructors. Here, Cathy Fink, who teaches our Maybelle Carter-Style Guitar course, is joined by Christylez Bacon for a cool clawhammer banjo and beatbox mashup. So great and a nice example of the breadth of styles and collaboration that Wintergrass is all about.
Throughout the weekend, Cathy and Marcy Marxer (who teaches Peghead Nation’s Ukulele course) played with Chinese classical hammered dulcimer master Chao Tian in their trio From China to Appalachia, a great East/West collaboration. Chris played with cellist Mike Block and bassist Edward Perez in the joyful trio Biriba Union. Cathy and Chris have a long collaborative history, including the Grammy-nominated children’s album Banjo to Beatbox, featuring Chris with Cathy and Marcy Marxer (who teaches Peghead Nation’s Ukulele course). It was fun to hear them together during this surprise performance!
