Nine Pound Hammer, Part 1: Melody-Based Soloing
Most of the great bluegrass guitarists use the melody of the song they are playing as a basis for their solos, rather than, for example, playing licks on chords. In this lesson, Scott uses the bluegrass standard “Nine Pound Hammer” to show you how to create a melody-based solo to a song, as well as how to create multiple variations to each melodic fragment so that you can vary your solo and eventually start improvising in a melodic way. He starts by showing you a break similar to one Clarence White played on the Kentucky Colonels’ recording Appalachian Swing.
