The California Bluegrass Association held the 40th Anniversary of its Father's Day Bluegrass Festival June 18 – 21 in Grass Valley, California, with appearances by Nashville Bluegrass Band, the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, Keith Little and the Little Band, the Good Ol' Person's reunion, the Crooked Jades, and many others.
Peghead Nation's Old-Time Fiddle instructor Bruce Molsky was on hand during the week leading up to the Festival as an instructor at the CBA Summer Music Camp, teaching (appropriately) old-time fiddle and old-time band classes.
During the Festival, Bruce played fiddle and guitar in sets with the band Jumpsteady Boys, which also includes Mike Compton on mandolin; Rafe Stefanini on fiddle, banjo, and guitar; and Joe Newberry on guitar and banjo.
On Friday afternoon, Jumpsteady Boys gathered in a clearing to talk with 20 or so lucky festival-goers about how to play in an old-time band setting. They touched on who their influences are, how the multi-instrumentalists in the band choose what to play on what tune, how to stay out of the way when necessary, and much more.
They played several tunes over the 2-hour discussion as well, including this spin through the song "Lazy John." Watch for the game of musical chairs part way through, when Joe Newberry needs to hear Bruce better in order to harmonize on the chorus.
