Elderly Instruments in Lansing, Michigan is one of the world’s premier acoustic instrument retailers. Last summer, Stan Werbin, owner of Elderly Instruments, approached his niece, artist Jennifer Springman, to design and paint a mural on the outside of the Elderly building. He had no idea the excitement it would bring to Lansing. In the six weeks it took to paint the mural, questions like, “What’s going in this building?” and “Is this really part of Elderly?” have been common from passersby. Elderly has been in this location since 1984 and added the building to the north in the early 1990s. Now the 68 foot x 15 foot mural adorning the wall facing North Washington Avenue will give viewers a better sense of what awaits them inside the doors of building.

The finished mural features a PRS electric guitar, a Martin HD-28 acoustic guitar and Style 3 ukulele, and a Deering Golden Era Banjo. Visitors can also join the life-size shadow band. The Michigan State Capitol building and the local Brenke Fish Ladder are highlighted among a variety of patterns on the wall.

Elderly Instruments celebrated the completion of the mural with a gathering on Tuesday, July 21 for the artist signing of the mural, live music from Elderly Instrument employees, and speeches from Werbin and local dignitaries. See below for photos of the project.
