Three acclaimed fingerstyle guitar authorities will cap off the 2017 Santa Barbara Acoustic Instrument Celebration’s workshop portion on Sunday, August 27th.
Doug Young, who specializes in alternate tunings, will lead off the Sunday workshops with DADGAD – Beyond the Basics for intermediate to advanced players. Doug will teach playing harp-style, chords beyond the key of D, chord progressions, and advanced chords.
Next up will be Solo Jazz Guitar: Arranging & Techniques for intermediate to advanced players with Sean McGowan. This workshop will be based on concepts from Sean’s book, Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar Essentials, and will include practical chord voicings and common substitutions, piano-style walking bass lines with chord comping, jazz rhythm and phrasing, playing multiple parts simultaneously, basics of improvisation for solo guitar, and more.
The weekend will finish up with long-time educator, author, and Grammy winner Mark Hanson teaching Fingerstyle “Travis Picking,” which will include a short demonstration and history of the ubiquitous alternating-bass fingerpicking style, training the thumb, “pinch” with index, middle and ring fingers, on and off the beat over the thumb pattern, and much more!
Tabs and handouts will be included for all classes, and a music stand will be provided.
Also be sure to check out the free demos in the foyer and seminars in the Heritage Exhibit. Charles Fox will discuss Getting Started in Lutherie and Chelsea Clark will present High End Repair and Conservation.
