One of the leading guitarists in Celtic music, Peghead Nation instructor Tony McManus will lead off the Saturday afternoon workshops at the 2017 Santa Barbara Acoustic Instrument Celebration (SBAIC), held in Santa Barbara, California, from August 25 - 27. Aimed at intermediate players, Tony’s Celtic Style workshop will help you get inside the Celtic idiom by covering several alternate tunings, the different structures of jigs, reels, and airs, as well as left and right hand ornamentation techniques.

The next Saturday afternoon workshop will be a special Slack'nSteel workshop for guitar, slide, Weissenborn, resonator, and dobro players, with Ken Emerson and Jim Kimo West. Starting with slack key guitar instruction in Open G or “Taro Patch” tuning, Ken and Jim will cover ascending and descending patterns, runs and turn-arounds, and other sounds that define slack key. They’ll also explore the places where slack key meets Hawaiian blues and jazz and look at some contemporary styles and unusual techniques. G Wahine (G Major 7th) tuning will be covered as well as “Drop C”. For those with lap slide guitars, Ken will teach lap steel techniques and demonstrate his unusual “slack/steel” technique.

Michael Chapdelaine, the only guitarist ever to win first prize at both the Guitar Foundation of America International classical guitar competition and the National Fingerstyle Championships, will finish off Saturday afternoon’s workshops with Melody, Harmony & Orchestration for Solo Guitar. Any tune or idea that you have ever thought of or heard can be played on solo guitar. It’s like solving a puzzle; knowing what to leave in and what to leave out is the key.

In addition to player’s workshops, the festival will feature free instrument demos in the foyer and seminars in the Heritage Exhibit. On Saturday, Harry Fleishman will present Historical and Contemporary Design Innovations in Lutherie, followed by Chuck Erikson discussing Guitar Inlay Materials. The day’s presentation will conclude with Harvey Leach on Thematic Inlays, Adding a Personal Touch to Your Instrument.

And if you want to start off your day on the gentle side, join Dream Guitars’ Paul Heumiller for Yoga and Meditation on the beach before the doors open.

Located at the beachside Fess Parker hotel in Santa Barbara, California, SBAIC '17 will feature the finest contemporary acoustic instruments, workshops, seminars and music. Share your passion with old and new friends for a fun, relaxing and inspiring weekend.
